The fate of Scarlet Witch has taken a grim turn as Marvel officially confirms her death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fans were left in suspense about Wanda Maximoff’s outcome towards the film’s conclusion. Although she appeared to be crushed by falling rocks, the uncertainty lingered due to the nature of the MCU, where characters often return, especially with her mystical powers suggesting a possible escape.
According to the MCU book titled Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline, Scarlet Witch’s tragic end is indeed confirmed. This occurs at the conclusion of Multiverse of Madness when Wanda destroys Mount Wundagore, resulting in a red burst once the rocks collapse upon her. The book states, “[Wanda] destroys Wundagore – and collapses it upon herself – ending two great threats to all of the Multiverse.” A symbol indicating a major character’s death in the book further solidifies Scarlet Witch’s fate.
How Scarlet Witch Met Her End in the Film
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda fully embraces her role as the Scarlet Witch. She embarks on a relentless quest through the multiverse to capture America Chavez and seize her powers. Using the Darkhold, Wanda dreamwalks across various universes in search of her children, who disappeared at the end of WandaVision. Her desire to reunite with them drives her to extreme measures, including the murder of multiple heroes from alternate universes.
Ultimately, Wanda decides to destroy the Darkhold temple along with its counterparts across the multiverse, acknowledging that the variants she encountered are not her children and ensuring such events cannot recur. In doing so, she brings down the temple, succumbing to the falling debris. Although her body is never shown, her demise marks the end of Scarlet Witch’s journey.
Why Scarlet Witch Deserved a Better Conclusion in the MCU
In Multiverse of Madness, Scarlet Witch’s destructive pursuit of a universe where she can be with her children takes center stage. She seeks America Chavez and is prepared to do anything to achieve her goal, including attacking Kamar-Taj and annihilating the Illuminati. When she finally confronts her children, they are horrified by the monstrous figure she has become, leading her to recognize her mistakes. To atone, she destroys the mountain and all copies of the Darkhold.
While her sacrifice redeems Wanda as a hero, it is a disappointing conclusion for a character who warranted more. Wanda underwent arguably the most trauma of any MCU character. She lost her family at a young age, endured experimentation, witnessed her brother die fighting Ultron, sacrificed Vision in vain, and suffered through the blip. After returning, she created a dream life in Westview, only to dismantle it.
Elizabeth Olsen has mentioned she will not reprise her role as Scarlet Witch in Agatha All Along, though she remains open to the character’s potential return to the MCU.
Her transition into a villain was understandable given her losses and desires. However, Multiverse of Madness transformed her from a complex hero into a villain who used her trauma to justify her actions. Wanda deserved a chance to transform her losses into strength and move forward, but she never received it. If Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was the end for Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda, the MCU missed an opportunity for a more fulfilling resolution.
Possibilities for Scarlet Witch’s Return in the Multiverse Saga
Despite Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch being confirmed to have died in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, this might not spell the end of her story, especially with the Multiverse Saga introducing variants. Given her previous reality-warping abilities in WandaVision, it remains possible for her to manifest in some form again.
Alternatively, a variant of Scarlet Witch might step into the spotlight, especially if Avengers: Secret Wars incorporates elements from the comics that merge universes. This could allow variants to have a permanent presence in the primary MCU timeline. This approach aligns with the MCU’s introduction of the X-Men, potentially bringing in a version of Scarlet Witch with her full mutant backstory.

How Agatha All Along Could Herald Scarlet Witch’s Return
The beginning of Agatha All Along features Agatha still under Wanda’s spell, believing she is Agnes, a detective investigating a murder scene with a victim resembling Wanda. Agnes eventually encounters Joe Locke’s character “Teen”, who helps release Agatha from the spell. This sets off a series of events potentially leading to Scarlet Witch’s return to the MCU.
Freed from the spell, Agatha assembles a new coven of witches to traverse the Witches’ Road, aiming to regain her lost powers from WandaVision. As depicted in Agatha All Along, the Witches’ Road is a mysterious realm holding secrets that could be key to resurrecting Wanda. Joe Locke’s character further links to Wanda throughout the series.
