An artificial intelligence specialist has highlighted how “ahead of its time” the portrayal of AI is in *Terminator 2: Judgment Day*. Released in 1991, this critically acclaimed sequel by James Cameron continues the narrative from 1984’s *The Terminator*. In this installment, Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises his role as the T-800, this time tasked with safeguarding Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and her son, John (Edward Furlong), from the advanced T-1000 model, played by Robert Patrick. The film delves deeply into the theme of AI, especially focusing on Skynet’s emergence as a sentient entity that seeks dominion.
In a recent video for Insider, AI researcher Sasha Luccioni examines specific scenes from *Terminator 2: Judgment Day*, noting that they largely depict AI in a manner that is accurate even by today’s standards. Luccioni reviews early scenes where Schwarzenegger’s character enters a bar, scanning license plates and assessing the patrons’ height and weight. She points out that the tasks shown in this scene are akin to current AI applications. However, the film’s depiction falters when it comes to the T-800’s engagement in hand-to-hand combat. Watch the video and see Luccioni’s insights below:
“That’s a capability that exists today. For instance, when you pass through a toll booth in the United States or Canada, it reads your license plate and can identify your car’s make. We’ve made significant strides in object recognition, especially concerning cars and street environments, largely due to autonomous vehicles.
“Estimating someone’s height or approximate weight is certainly a task AI is used for, particularly in CCTV surveillance when identifying suspects. AI is trained to perform such tasks, though its accuracy can vary based on conditions like baggy clothing or surrounding objects.
“Determining someone’s height becomes challenging in a featureless space without objects for comparison and triangulation. However, if a person stands next to a car or pool table, you can more reliably estimate their height.
“AI would struggle with reactive hand-to-hand combat. Predicting human actions and responding swiftly is difficult for AI due to human spontaneity and unpredictability.
“As humans, we instinctively anticipate movement. If you were to throw something at a moving target, you’d aim where they’d be shortly. AI, however, would need to calculate the trajectory and timing to intercept.
“I’d rate this clip an eight out of ten. The movie was definitely ahead of its time and influenced subsequent AI research.”
What Terminator 2: Judgment Day’s AI Accuracy Means For The Franchise
How a Sense of Plausibility Contributed to the Film’s Success
The *Terminator* series firmly belongs to the science-fiction genre, and it is evident that the boundaries of contemporary technology and AI are stretched for entertainment. However, the high accuracy rating Luccioni gives to Cameron’s film underscores its narrative’s plausibility and the integration of real scientific concepts into its grand storytelling. This sense of realism contributes to the enduring appeal of the first two *Terminator* films—what unfolds on screen may not be real, but it feels plausible.

The Popcornmeter score, once known as the audience score, is even higher at 95%. The film was also a box office triumph, earning $520.9 million globally. Cameron’s dedication to detail and foresight concerning technology is a hallmark of his broader work, evident in his recent *Avatar* films, which also incorporate credible technological advancements.
Our Perspective on Terminator 2’s AI Representation
The Fictional Aspects Enhance Entertainment
While there are genuine concerns and questions about AI today, from an entertainment standpoint, *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* exemplifies the thrill of portraying technology as the antagonist. Patrick’s T-1000 is both formidable and frightening, despite its unrealistic nature as an intelligent, liquid metal entity.
Although the AI combat scenes may not be true to life, these embellishments are vital for crafting a gripping, action-packed narrative. This fusion of entertainment and insightful consideration of technology and its potential results in *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* being a quintessential Cameron masterpiece.
