Cobie Smulders Open to Reprising Maria Hill Role in MCU Despite Character’s Death in ‘Secret Invasion’

Cobie Smulders Open to Returning to MCU Despite Maria Hill's Demise in *Secret Invasion*

Cobie Smulders, the actress behind Maria Hill, has expressed her openness to rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe following her character’s demise in *Secret Invasion*, should the opportunity present itself. Maria Hill made her debut as Nick Fury’s trusted associate in *The Avengers*. She further appeared in *Captain America: The Winter Soldier*, *Avengers: Age of Ultron*, and the post-credits scene of *Avengers: Infinity War*. In *Spider-Man: Far From Home*, the Skrull Soren impersonated her, and the real Maria Hill made a comeback in *Secret Invasion*. Regrettably, her character met an untimely end in the first episode of the series.

During the Toronto International Film Festival, *Screen Rant* engaged in an interview with *Sharp Corner* stars Cobie Smulders and Ben Foster. In the conversation, *Screen Rant* inquired whether Smulders would consider returning to the MCU, despite Maria Hill’s premature exit in *Secret Invasion*. Smulders enthusiastically affirmed her willingness to reprise her role in the MCU, provided Marvel extends the invitation. Below are Cobie Smulders’ full remarks:

*Screen Rant*: “Despite Maria Hill’s unfortunate departure in *Secret Invasion*, would you consider returning if the MCU remedies their grave error?”

Cobie Smulders: “Absolutely, yes. When Marvel reaches out, you answer. You do what they ask of you — at least, I do.”

Possible Avenues for Cobie Smulders’ Return as Maria Hill Post-*Secret Invasion*

#### The MCU’s History of Reviving Characters

Maria Hill’s death appears final, as Nick Fury confirmed she wasn’t a Skrull when Gravik fatally shot her at the conclusion of *Secret Invasion* episode 1. Skrulls revert to their original form upon death, so the MCU can’t easily dismiss her death as a red herring. Still, should Marvel Studios decide to resurrect Hill, several options exist. For instance, Project TAHITI, which successfully revived Agent Phil Coulson in *Agents of SHIELD*, could be employed.

If Marvel chooses to reintroduce Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill, she may need to be a variant from an alternate universe.

Though *Agents of SHIELD* hasn’t been definitively integrated into the MCU canon, Marvel Studios could still weave elements of the series into the main MCU narrative. This could occur via the Multiverse or as part of a soft reboot, incorporating the notion of science-based resurrection. Alternatively, Maria Hill could be resurrected through magical means. However, this would come at a significant cost, as neither the Darkhold nor the Infinity Stones possess the power to bring someone back to life. While those lost to Thanos’ Snap were successfully restored, their revival was possible because being snapped differs from actual death.

Marvel's Official Explanation For Maria Hill's Death Makes The MCU Twist Even More Insulting

The simplest method to reintroduce Maria Hill to the MCU may lie in the multiverse. Characters such as Loki, Gamora, and Maria Rambeau have returned post-mortem, though they are not their original selves. Similarly, Scarlet Witch recreated Vision’s consciousness using her magic, and Evan Peters portrayed an alternate version of Quicksilver in *WandaVision*. If Marvel were to bring back Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill, she would likely emerge as a variant from another timeline, or the MCU might need to devise a creative explanation for the arrival of a new version of Hill.
